Makani Hounds & Dog Training is a evidence-based canine coaching service dedicated to cultivating strong partnerships and harmonious relationships between dogs and their handlers. Specializing in small group classes and personalized one-on-one sessions, we offer comprehensive training in home manners, including CGC/CGCA/CGCU certifications, canine fitness, tricks, and preparation for animal acting roles. Our expertise extends to various dog sports such as obedience, rally & scent work, as well as the development of therapy dogs and owner-trained service dogs. At Makani Hounds, we prioritize effective communication, mutual understanding, and teamwork to empower both dogs and their owners to thrive together.

Laura LaForest - Head Trainer

Laura is the dedicated head trainer and owner of Makani Hounds & Dog Training, bringing over a decade of experience in various dog sports and training domains. Specializing in obedience, rally, agility, and scent work, Laura’s expertise extends to trick training, animal acting, therapy, and service dog training. As a Certified Trick Dog Instructor (CTDI) and an Animal Actors Certified Evaluator (AACE), Laura is committed to fostering positive relationships between humans and their canine companions. Her credentials also include being an AKC CGC/Trick Dog Evaluator and an AKC Fit Dog Instructor. Beyond her professional pursuits, Laura generously volunteers her time as a leader for a 4H dog club in Monroe, MI, and serves on the Board at the Toledo Kennel Club. She further contributes to the community by instructing Rally and Trick dog classes at TKC, embodying her passion for canine education and welfare.
